Transforming hearts, minds, and souls; by sharing Truth and showing true love through Jesus Christ to women and their children who have no voice in this world.
We visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the first time several years ago during one of our Church’s mission trips. I was so broken when I visited the homes of these people. The smells were awful and their living situations were so sickening. I cried for months when I came back to the USA. I could not believe that people really lived this way. I have seen it on TV, but now I have experienced it in real life and I had no idea how bad it really is. TV doesn’t even do justice to the real truth, until you walk it, smell the smells and see it with your own eyes. My dogs live in better conditions than these families do. This saddens my heart, and God has called me to rise up and do something to help these people who are among the poorest of poor.
During this mission trip we were studying Isaiah 61 and God laid this verse out as our call to this ministry:
because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted;
To proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor" (Isaiah 61:1-3)
The children in this area are extremely impoverished. Almost all of these children are affected by HIV and most of the time both parents are positive. In many cases, one parent has already died (usually the father) from AIDS, leaving the other parent (the mother) very ill and unable to care for their children. Fortunately not all children that are born from HIV+ parents are HIV+ themselves. Praise God for this! But that leaves two-thirds of the children without the virus, but also without parents to raise them and give them hope in their lives. Sadly one-third of the children are born HIV+. Those children have the average life span of only about 10 years old in this community, this makes me cry.
As we visited homes and fell in love with the people, we realized we could make a huge difference by simply helping the local church provide for the most basic of needs. That is how Transformation Love came about.
